Dynamic vs fixed commission links
Dynamic Commission Links are where we update the commission of an affiliate link automatically when you update either the base commission on your account or the affiliate level.
Dynamic Commission Links are automatically turned on when you sign up to Avelon. They automatically manage an affiliates commission rates on their links and negate the need for you to manually update the commission rates on links every time you update the commission rate for an affiliate or at the base level.
Dynamic = it changes
Fixed links are where the link is set at a singular level of commission that does not change when you update the commission at either the base commission or the affiliate level.
Fixed links are automatically turned off when you sign up to Avelon. If you’d like to change your links from Dynamic to Fixed, you’ll need to email your Account Manager.
Fixed = it doesn’t change
What is the point of Dynamic Commission Links?
Across the affiliate industry, it’s common place that when an affiliate link is created, the link gets assigned a commission level that has been agreed with the affiliate. For example, if you accept an affiliate into your program and your base commission (the commission across your entire account) is 5%, then that link will provide the affiliate a 5% commission.
The link level commission is hard coded to the commission that has been assigned and you can’t change the commission on the link once it has been created. If you’d like the affiliate to be assigned a different commission % on that link, you’d need to create a new link and assign a new commission to the affiliate. This involves the affiliate removing that link and adding the new link – which we promise you, is pretty inconvenient.
Dynamic Commission Links solve this problem and are specific to Avelon. Instead of hard coding the commission to the affiliate, we use a fluid commission to link relationship which will update the commission on an affiliates link whenever you change their commission. This negates the need for you to create new links every time an affiliate commission has been updated.
Example of how Dynamic Commission Links work
Dynamic Commission Links update the commissions at the hierarchy level. The hierarchy explanation is simple: the baseline commission level of your program is tier 1 and affiliate level commission overrides that at tier 2, which is higher and overrides the baseline. Tier 1 (baseline) will never override tier 2 (affiliate level).
If you have Dynamic Commission Links turned on and you change the commission at your baseline, then all affiliates who are on the baseline will have all their links changed to the new commission rate you have set. Examples of links underneath tier 1 are product feed links and affiliate links where you have not manually changed the affiliates commission rate, i.e affiliates that have been approved into your program but no specific commission at the affiliate level has been agreed.
Baseline level does not update specific affiliate agreements you have in place outside of the baseline.
Affiliate level commission overrides the baseline for that specific affiliate agreement. If you have set an affiliate level commission for a specific affiliate and you have only updated the baseline, then DLS will not update the commissions for that specific affiliate.
For Dynamic Commission Links to automatically update affiliate specific commissions, you’ll need to change the affiliates commission on their profile. When you update their profile, it will automatically update their link commissions through DLS.
What happens if I update the baseline commission rate?
If you update the baseline commission rate, then all links belonging to affiliates on the baseline will be updated to the new rate.
The baseline commission rate only applies to affiliates that are on the baseline, i.e an affiliate that has been approved into your program but does not have a specific affiliate agreement with you. A specific affiliate agreement is whereby you specifically go to that affiliates profile and update their commission.
What happens if I update an affiliate level commission but not the baseline commission level?
Dynamic Commission Links are hierarchy based, so if you update the affiliate level commission for a specific affiliate then only that affiliate will have their links updated to the new commission rate.
Even if the new baseline commission rate is higher, or lower, than the affiliate level commission, affiliate level commission will not be updated.
Can I turn off Dynamic Commission Links?
Dynamic Commission Links are a requirement on all link hierarchy’s, but you can opt-out of this feature when you create links manually. It’s not recommended you do this, but if you’d like to provide different commissions for different traffic sources, you can.
For example, if an affiliate is using one link for both TikTok and Instagram stories and you’d like to offer higher commissions for a specific traffic source, we recommend having specific links for each traffic source and turning Dynamic Commission Links off.
Dynamic Commission Links will automatically change these links to the standard commission you offer – but if you have this feature turned off, it will keep the commission you set on the link.
