One-time use promo codes & promo code groups

One-time use promo codes are the key to stopping promo code websites picking up your promo codes, but it’s also down to how these codes are distributed that really stop affiliate coupon scraping. In this guide, we’ll cover how to upload one-time use promo codes to Avelon and use cases for these codes.

What do we cover in this article?

How does it all work?

We use a mixture of anti-bot technology on Smart Referral Pages, unique user identifiers and one-time use coupon codes to ensure codes cannot be leaked and attribution is true to the affiliate.Β To stop coupon codes getting leaked, you need to stop affiliates actually sharing codes altogether.Β

The below step-by-step guide explains how it all works in sequence.

1. Brand uploads one-time use promo codes via a csv to Avelon

The brand creates a promo code group within Avelon and uploads a spreadsheet of promo codes (we recommend 1000+ codes at once) to the group.

The brand then selects which links they want to circulate these promo codes within. When a promo code group is attached to a link, a Smart Referral Page is made.

The affiliate then promotes this link across their platforms. They do not share a code as the unique code is assigned to the user within the link.

If the user passes the anti-bot algorithm, we assign a unique identifier to the user.

The user is then assigned a random, unique promo code from the promo code pool.

If the user already has a unique identifier assigned to them, then we show themΒ

5. Affiliate gets attributed the sale if that specific promo code is used

If that specific user (with their device ID) purchases with the promo code assigned to them, then the affiliate gets attributed the sale.

What happens to promo codes that aren't used?

Promo codes that are assigned to a consumer and affiliate but are not used within the attribution window are automatically added back into circulation and available for re-assignment.

How to create a promo code group

Promo code groups have two use cases; they allow you to upload one-time use promo codes and assign them to affiliates and they keep your promo codes organised and allow for quick, efficient reporting in the Dashboard.

To create a promo code group, just:

  1. Click My Affiliates > Promo codes > Promo code groups
  2. Click Create promo code group & name the group of codes
Once you have created a promo code group, you can upload promo codes to the group for automatic distribution, or you can add evergreen codes into the group for better organisation of promo codes.

How to upload one-time use promo codes

To upload one-time use promo codes, simply:

  1. Create a promo code group
  2. Drag your CSV with all your promo codes into the upload box
  3. Press save

You can download a template of the CSV above the upload box.Β

Recommendations:

  1. Name your promo code group something memorable. The affiliate will not see the promo code group name so this is just for organisational purposes only.Β
  2. Don’t mix codes with different discount amounts in the same group, i.e keep 10% codes and 20% codes in separate groups

How to assign a promo code group to a link

To assign a promo code group to a link, simply:

  1. Head to Dashboard > My Links
  2. Select the dropdown next to the link you’d like to assign to a link and select the promo code group
The promo code group name will be what you named it when you created the group.

What happens when you assign a promo code group to a link?

When you assign a promo code group to a link, it creates a Smart Referral Page. A Smart Referral Page is our anti coupon code scraping tech that stops any coupon code website leaking your promo codes – and stops your affiliates posting promo codes on the internet.

Not only this, but our technology uniquely assigns these promo codes one-by-one to people clicking the affiliate link with unique identifiers. This eliminates users ever seeing more than one promo code at a time as they are assigned via an identifier to their specific device.

A scenario which explains this is: Tom clicks an affiliate link and see’s the promo code XNIRCN37292. He doesn’t purchase with that code but comes back 3-weeks later via the same link and see’s the same promo code (XNIRCN37292) again. He then purchases with this promo code.

When Tom clicked that affiliate link, we created a unique identifier on Tom’s device to assign that promo code to Tom. If Tom passed that link to one of his friends, they would not see the same promo code and they would be assigned a different promo code.
