How do I create an affiliate tracking link?
Who is the guide designed for?
This guide is written for both affiliates and for brands who are looking to create an affiliate tracking link. Brands and affiliates will see two separate ways of creating affiliate tracking links – both of which will be outlined in this guide. But first, we must answer what an affiliate tracking link actually is and the reason for using them.
What is an affiliate tracking link?
Affiliate tracking links are used to track the user who has clicked that link until they have either made a purchase on that specific website which the link is directing to, or the attribution window closes. Whilst both affiliate tracking links and standard URLs perform the same primary role of taking the user to the URL destination, the way in which they are built and what data they collect are entirely different.
What's the difference between an affiliate tracking link and a normal URL?
Whilst these links perform the same role to the person who click the link, these links perform entirely different tasks in the background. An affiliate tracking link, as its name suggests, tracks the user who clicks the link for a period of time and is designed for the affiliate industry. The standard URL does not track the user and solely directs the user to the website.
Does Avelon generate tracking links for me?
Yes, Avelon does generate tracking links for you. When you have applied and been accepted into an affiliate program, Avelon automatically generates an affiliate tracking link to the homepage of that brands website. Our system then sends you that link in an email and also adds it to your My Links section of the Dashboard.
How to create an affiliate tracking link
Creating an affiliate tracking link with Avelon is incredibly simple. There are two different ways to create a link as an affiliate, and we will guide you through both of these processes below. Please note: you must be approved into an affiliate program prior to creating an affiliate tracking link.
Option one: through the Opportunities tab
Step one: head to the Opportunities tab
Head to the Opportunities tab in your Dashboard. This is where all the available affiliate programs within Avelon live. Find the brand you’d like to generate a link for through either searching in the search bar, selecting from a specific filter or scrolling down the pages.
Step two: click Generate Link
Click the Generate Link button on the program you’d like to generate a link for. The button will be yellow if you have been accepted into the program which means you can generate a link, or it will be grey if you have not yet been accepted into the program.
Step three: click Generate Link
Once you press the Generate Link button, a pop up will appear in the centre of the screen and give you a few options:
Enter a URL (optional) – you may paste a URL of your choosing into this box, such as a direct link to a product page on the brands website. You must paste the entire URL into this box, not just after the domain name. This step is optional and if you do not enter a specific URL, the system will generate a link to the homepage of that website.
Name this link – you must name the link in order for the platform to generate the link. The naming of the link is only viewable by you and is designed so you can tell the links apart in your My Links tab of the Dashboard.
Step four: click Generate
Once you click Generate – a red selection of text will state Your link is ready (click to copy to clipboard): – followed by the link generate underneath. You can copy the link by clicking the link.
Your links are saved in your My Links section of the Dashboard, so don’t worry if you don’t want to use this link just yet. We also email you the link you have generated.
Option two: through the My Retailers tab
The My Retailers tab is where all your approved applications are stored. It gives you an overview of your commission percentage agreed to, your CPC (cost per click) assigned and allows you to view the retailers profile and generate a link.
Step one: click My Retailers
Once you have clicked My Retailers – a table of brands you have been accepted into will pop up. Much the same as generating a link through the Opportunities tab, you can click Generate Link to generate an affiliate tracking link.
Frequently asked questions
Where are my links stored?
Your links are stored in the My Links section of the Dashboard. To find your links, click the Dashboard button and then switch to the My Links tab. From here, you can view your links, copy them, create a QR code and even test the links destination.
How do I know if I've made any sales?
Avelon will notify you via email at 0800 GMT if you have made any sales within the previous 24-hours. We also run attribution every 60-minutes, so your Dashboard will update when a new sale has been registered.
